For UK online sellers · MTD for Income Tax

Your Etsy, eBay and Amazon exports, turned into one MTD-ready workbook.

From 6 April 2027, sole traders with qualifying income over £30,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. TidyTill combines your marketplace downloads, works out gross turnover rather than payouts, splits it into MTD periods, and shows what needs checking before you submit through the bridging software you already use.

In development. Record-keeping only: no tax advice, nothing sent to HMRC.

The problem with marketplace numbers

Payouts aren't turnover

Platforms pay you after fees, ads and postage labels. HMRC's threshold and your records use the gross amount before expenses, so your bank deposits can understate turnover.

Reports don't match MTD periods

Etsy statements are monthly and Amazon settles every couple of weeks, but MTD periods run 6 April to 5 July and so on. Each update is cumulative from 6 April.

Several platforms, one business

Sell on two marketplaces and take PayPal? The same sale can appear twice, and transfers between your own accounts can look like income.

How it works

  1. Download your platform files

Etsy monthly statements, eBay Transaction report, Amazon Flat File V2 settlements, PayPal activity, Shopify Payments transactions. Our guides show where each one is.

  2. Upload them together

Files are recognised by their columns. Buyer names, addresses and emails are dropped as files are read.

  3. Get one workbook

A Summary, cumulative Quarterly totals in fixed cells, a full Ledger and a Health Check listing anything that needs your attention.

  4. Review, then link it

Add off-platform costs, check the flags, then link the workbook to your HMRC-recognised bridging software and submit from there.

What it won't do. It won't submit anything to HMRC, hold your HMRC login, work out your tax bill, or decide whether you're trading. Category suggestions are defaults you can change, and an accountant should confirm them. You submit through software listed on HMRC's software finder, such as a spreadsheet bridging tool.

What we're building differently

Good tools already exist for parts of this. Etsy-only converters are cheap and simple. Accounting connectors suit sellers on Xero or QuickBooks. At least one spreadsheet add-on combines several marketplaces. Here's where TidyTill is focused:

What sellers needHow TidyTill handles it
Several platforms in one set of recordsEtsy, eBay, Amazon, PayPal and Shopify merged into one ledger, with a platform column so you can check each against its payouts
Gross turnover, not depositsGross receipts, less platform-collected tax, less refunds. Fees appear as expenses and are never netted off
MTD periods and cumulative updatesStandard (6 April) or calendar (1 April) periods, per-period and cumulative totals, and each deadline
No double countingSpots the same file uploaded twice, overlapping date ranges, and PayPal receipts that repeat a marketplace order. Payouts are treated as transfers
Settlements across a quarter endAmazon lines are split by posted-date, and each settlement is checked against its deposit
Knowing what to checkA Health Check sheet: missing Etsy months, unrecognised row types (never guessed), payouts vs computed totals, and the £30k and £20k thresholds
Foreign currencyHMRC monthly exchange rates by transaction month. Any other rate is labelled
Works with bridging softwareA Quarterly sheet whose cells never move, so you map it once. We're checking import formats for spreadsheet bridging tools such as VitalTax, 123 Sheets and AbraTax (we aren't affiliated with them)

The prototype has been tested on example files built to each platform's documented layout. We're looking for a few sellers to test it with real exports before launch.

Sample workbook

This is the Summary sheet from a demo run, made from made-up example data for a fictional shop.

Summary sheet of a sample MTD workbook for a fictional shop called Example Ceramics, made from synthetic data. It shows turnover, expenses, a turnover build-up from gross receipts to turnover, a by-platform table for Amazon, Etsy, PayPal, Shopify and eBay, a by-period table with cumulative figures and deadlines, a threshold tracker and a health check summary.
Example data Synthetic figures for "Example Ceramics", tax year 2025/26. Not a real seller. Other sheets: Quarterly (fixed cells for bridging software), Ledger, Health Check and Category Map.

Who it's for

  • UK sole traders selling on Etsy, eBay, Amazon or Shopify, often more than one
  • People who'd rather keep records in a spreadsheet than move to full accounting software
  • Sellers joining MTD in April 2027 or April 2028, and those already in from April 2026
  • Bookkeepers who receive marketplace downloads from clients

Pricing

Free preview: upload your exports and see the headline totals, quarters and Health Check before paying.

  • £49 a year: a full workbook every time you upload for 12 months, so you can rebuild it each quarter.

Flat prices, no VAT added. You'd also need HMRC-recognised bridging software, which is sold separately by its providers.

Vinted doesn't offer a sales CSV, so it isn't supported yet. Tick it below if you need it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this HMRC-recognised MTD software?

No. TidyTill is a record-keeping aid. It prepares a workbook from your platform files. You send quarterly updates and your tax return through HMRC-recognised software, for example a bridging tool that reads spreadsheets. HMRC's software finder lists them.

Does it send anything to HMRC or need my HMRC login?

No. It never connects to HMRC and never asks for your Government Gateway or HMRC details.

Can I use a spreadsheet for MTD?

Yes. HMRC says you can keep spreadsheet records if you use software that links to them to send updates and your return. Downloading a file and importing it elsewhere counts as a digital link. Copy and paste doesn't. GOV.UK: create digital records.

Which files does it read?

Etsy monthly statement CSVs (and optionally Sold Orders), the eBay Transaction report, Amazon Flat File V2 settlement reports, PayPal activity downloads and Shopify Payments transaction exports. Vinted isn't supported yet because it doesn't offer a sales CSV.

Why does it show a higher turnover than my bank deposits?

Because HMRC uses turnover before expenses, and platforms deduct fees, ads and postage before paying you. The workbook shows each step from gross receipts to turnover, so you can see where every pound comes from. More on gross vs net.

Will it tell me whether I need MTD?

It compares your figures with the published thresholds for information. Whether you need MTD depends on the turnover on your previous tax return, any exemption, and whether you're trading. HMRC has an online checker.

What happens to my files?

Buyer names, addresses and emails are dropped as files are read. Uploaded files are deleted as soon as your workbook is built, and the workbook and preview are deleted 24 hours after upload (sooner if you press Delete). The service is hosted in London. Details are in the privacy notice.

How much will it cost?

The preview is free: upload your files and see the totals, quarters and Health Check before you pay. Unlocking the full workbook for that upload costs £19 one-off. £49 a year unlocks a workbook every time you upload for 12 months, so you can rebuild it each quarter. These are flat prices with no VAT added. Bridging software is a separate cost from its provider.

Important

TidyTill prepares records from files you upload. It is not tax advice, it is not HMRC-recognised software, and it doesn't send anything to HMRC. You're responsible for checking the figures and submitting through HMRC-recognised software. Category suggestions are defaults you can change, so ask an accountant if you're unsure. Whether you need MTD depends on your own circumstances: check GOV.UK.
